 Don't Buy - Eats ink, jams paper and HP Customer Service is awful May 19, 2010

I purchased this printer (HP Photosmart D7260) in 2008 and I have not been happy. I do not recommend you buy this printer unless you want the best in home picture printing. You will be paying top dollar for HP Vivera ink and HP Premium paper and you are ill advised to try and use the printer for every day printing (slow, noisy and it is not intuitive to get it to successfully handle any non-standard prints like envelopes, address labels very well).
Pros: I printed sets of vibrant color pictures for hanging in our home and I am happy with how they look and how long they have lasted. I used HP Premium paper and HP Vivera ink; the pictures look good and have not faded after hanging on the wall for almost 2 years in a bright room in California.
Cons: This printer uses a lot of ink and *will not function without full ink cartridges* (5 @ $11 apiece on HP.com) - when I say "will not function" I mean will not print in black & white, which is a deal breaker for me. I am disappointed in HP using such a cheap ploy to get you to buy more ink, claiming to "ensure printer health" - bah humbug HP. I tried printing address labels and envelopes, but couldn't get a satisfactory result. Possible user error, but I've done it on 2 other printers since with no problem (at work and a friend's printer - don't know model#s) so probably not. It takes almost a minute to start up the printer and it makes a terrible noise doing so - this noise has woken up my little boy *in the next room*, which has been a great nuisance (can't print while he is sleeping). The printer has a very large footprint and takes up a lot of room for the front trays and the power supply "brick" is enormous. Lastly, I have tried setting this printer up as a network printer and even after installing all of HP's several hundreds of megabytes of software, I cannot print from anywhere but the desktop the printer is attached to. Oh, and as others have commented, paper jams are not uncommon - I've only had them with printer paper, not photo stock paper.
Summary: Given the price of ink, the noise of starting up and printing, the difficulty in setting up the printer, the difficulty in getting it to print all but the most common sizes of paper to my satisfaction, this printer is not worth your money unless you are using it specifically to print 4x6 and 8x11 color prints for hanging or giving to family and friends, from a convenient location. I am not sure there is a cost advantage to this solution vs. just uploading your pictures to an online service that can print them professionally and mail them back to you (or directly to the person you want to have them). My two cents.

Don't waste your money on this printer. It eats ink very quickly. As soon as one of the cartridges runs out of ink (which seems to happen entirely too often) it won't print anything, even in black ink. This has happened to me too many times... I'm planning to throw it out and get something else. I have never been happy with the quality of pictures is prints either. The first sheet out always has colors that are way off, the second sheet looks better... but who wants to waste all of that ink? Buy something else.

I have had this printer about a year now. I love the quality of photo printing, however, I think it's more cost effective to buy prints at my local Target or Walgreens, especially when a 5 pack of color cartridges just set me back more than $50 and that's not including black! When you first turn on the printer, it spends about 2 solid minutes going through "printer preparation" so make sure you are in no hurry to print something quick before leaving out the door. Today I had something quite interesting happen - after the "printer preparation" finished, the touch screen display told me to replace my cyan cartridge soon, but when I printed a page from a website, it told me to replace my photo magenta soon, yet i would not allow me to print my paper until I selected the option "use black only." I took my photo magenta out and shook it, still ink in there and did the same with my cyan and wow, still ink in there as well. In my old Canon that used individual color cartridges, I could use the printer up till the time no more ink came out. This one doesn't give you the option, perhaps because HP wants you to go buy more pricy ink right away. I do enjoy the built-in card reader both fpr printing pictures without turning the computer on and for uploading pictures without my camera connected to a USB port. I like being able just to take the card out of my camera and place it in the printer. Wireless connectivity is another benefit, having three computers and all can print to this one. ONE SUGGESTION - go into your printer preferences and change your default to fast/economical printing for all non photo printing to save ink. If I had the choice to buy this again, I wouldn't due to the price and frequency of ink use.

There are so many printers on the market that are doing a solid job, and the Photosmart D7260 is one of them. I have not had a single problem with this unit. The touchscreen is intuitive and sharing this printer over the network couldn't be simpler. It's got support for several different flash cards although I rarely use them.
I can only give this unit 4 stars though because these companies should be put in jail for what they charge us for ink. It's a crime.
I guess these inks are made out of Gold.

Yes the prints are very good and it is fast... but that's it. This printer will continually jams (read other reviews) and it refuses to print envelopes. Then when it jams the paper you have to go to the back of the machine and open it, pry out the jammed paper and then put the cheaply design door back on. What a hassle. The paper feed tray pulls out forward of the machine which means you can not place this on a work desk without clearing what you have in front of the printer every time you need to put paper in... Who in the heck designed this malformation?
